The Open Mind Center Say it with Art- a Contemporary Art Experience for Kids - Ages 11-16


Course Description:

In Say It with Art children will learn that art has a specific purpose. It is a communication tool for those wanting to use visual language to Say it with Art. Children love to discover new ways to communicate their AMAZING ideas. Contemporary art gives them a wonderful platform to explore new ways of expression. Encourage the creative thinker within your child by giving them the gift of art expression. By the end of this introductory course you can expect your child will begin to develop confidence in using a variety of art tools. Each week your child will study a different artist and learn how to read information within the artist’s work.

Group 2 & 4 (ages 11-16) max 14
Wednesdays 9:30 – 11:00am
Group 2 dates: 6/2, 6/9, 6/16, 6/23, 6/30 & 7/7
Group 4 dates: 7/14, 7/21, 7/28, 8/4, 8/11 & 8/18
Investment: $120 for 6 week series

This class is different from other children’s art classes in the area because students will not be producing arts and crafts projects instead this class will be educational and creative, broadening the minds of the children while helping them to find their inner artist. The course of study will feature a different artist and style each week. It will be dynamic, not just a black + white= gray course of study. We will take your children on an artistic adventure that will finish with a presentation of the work produced in class.

The class will study Emily Kame Kngwarreye, Robert Morris, Meret Oppenheim, Do-Ho Suh, Fiona Hall, Cornelia Parker, Mark Rothko, Alselm Keifer, Richard Diebenkorn, Jasper Johns, Pablo Picasso and Gerhard Richter.

Materials required for class:
Pencils: 2B, 4B, 6B, 8B
Brushes: Flat Brush - 1”, ½”, ¼” Round Brush #1,3,5,8
1 x round plastic palette with a lid
1 x canvas 16 x 20
1 x drawing pad 14 x 17
Acrylic Paints: Student Quality Only
- Black, White, Cadmium Yellow, Phthalo Blue, Burnt Umber, Yellow Oxide, Vermillion, Primary Red, Raw Sienna, Green Light, Green Deep (you may bring additional colors but it is not a requirement)

Bring from home:
1 x recycled plastic tub for washing brushes (e.g. large yogurt tub)
1 x rag cloth for cleaning up and paint prep (e.g. old hand towel)
1 x paint shirt or apron

Amanda Ambrus is a practicing visual artist, focusing on large painting and installation. Her work is driven by local research and public issues. 

As an emerging artist, Amanda is committed to exploring a diverse range of mediums and art practice. With a number of commissions in both Australia and the United States, she is dedicated to continually developing and exploring new research opportunities. Amanda is an Arts graduate of Curtin University in Western Australia and has been consistently involved in bringing art programs to the public for the past 15 years.
