The Open Mind Center Building Blocks to Health


Course Description:

We all want to be healthy, make good food choices for our family and maintain a good weight; but with so many diets and health plans out there, it’s hard to know what to eat. Building Blocks to Health is a four part series that will examine the many facets of nutritional health for you and your family. After completing the course, you will be well versed on the basics of nutrition and have a deeper understanding of the interrelationships between your food choices and your health.

Throughout the series, you will experience a food tasting, receive nutrition information, and take home recipes that are geared toward the whole family!

Nutrition 101: We all want to be healthy, make good food choices for our family and maintain a good weight; but with so many diets and get healthy plans out there, its hard to know what to eat. Having a basic understanding of how our bodies use fats, proteins and carbohydrates is essential to making good choices. Nutrition 101 breaks these concepts down in laymen’s terms that are easily translated into what to put on your plate. 


Nutrition 102:  This is an advanced version or our Nutrition 101 class. Subjects covered include omega 3 fatty acids, common food additives, reading nutrition facts, calculating portion size and individual protein needs.


Detox and Revive: This class is for anyone who has ever thought about or felt like it was time to cleanse.  There are several times a year when a good cleanse can detoxify and revive your cells to help alleviate allergies, asthma and much more. In this class we will review the tops ways to safely cleanse your whole system and how to include more fiber in your diet for everyday maintenance, which will help you to have more energy and possibly shed that unwanted weight.


What Color is Your Family: The natural colors in fruits and vegetables represent the nutrient make-ups and antioxidant profiles in these foods. Antioxidants are compounds in foods that fight cancer and aging and there are over 100 antioxidants to be found in foods. This class will discuss the most common antioxidants explain in detail the role they play in our bodies and how to get them. Common signs of nutrient deficiency and maximizing nutrient absorption will also be discussed. This class is very family oriented and involves lots of visuals and some hands on exercises.
