Wellness & Holistic Therapy: Acupressure
Acupressure follows the ideas of traditional Chinese medicine founded on the same ideas as acupuncture. It utilizes physical pressure via a hand, elbow, or other device on different points, parts of the meridian system, on the body. During the massage muscle tension is released increasing the flow of energy, Qi, and circulation of blood throughout the body. Generally, Acupressure also brings relief and calm to the mind and emotions. In addition, the increase of energy created by acupressure assists the body in its own self healing processes.
Acupressure History
Acupressure massage is a form of therapy based on Traditional Chinese Medicine that has been utilized for at least 5000 years. Acupressure is most widely accepted in Asian countries like Japan, China, and India. The earliest Acupunctural evidence lies in a 5000 year old mummy that has been preserved in an alpine glacier. Ötzi the Iceman, as he is called, has tattoos that correspond to places on the body an acupuncturist would single out during acupressure therapy. It is, however, not sure whether that is what these tattoos were used for. It is speculated that they may have been used as decoration, or as religious symbols. Forms of Acupressure were first applied during Chinese wars, when arrows, bamboo, and bones would be used to prod a patient, to cure long standing health problems.
Eastern medicinal techniques were overlooked by the west until missionaries were sent to convert the Chinese but instead returned with a wealth of knowledge about the Chinese ways of medicine. Acupressure can be seen in the Canon of Medicine written between 475-221 B.C. This is important because not only does this provide evidence for early use of the meridian system, but it also shows existence of, in some form, Acupressure.
Acupressure massage was once a very commonly used science utilized to strengthen the body and treat medical problems. Unfortunately, with the introduction of pills most people changed from the use of acupressure to the use of allopathy (the method of treating disease by the use of agents that produce effects different from those of the disease treated).
