Wellness & Holistic Therapy: Chakra Balancing
The 7 major chakras (or centers of energy) are located from the base of the spine to the top of the head. They are the root, sacral, solar plexus, heart, throat, brow, and crown chakras. Each chakra is said to be related to major organs and glands. Health concerns can be related to an imbalance in the chakra itself which manifests into physical illness. In order to maintain good health, each chakra should be balanced and able to function independently. Chakra balancing not only promotes physical well-being, but also emotional, mental and spiritual wellness.
A chakra balancing massage uses breathing, touch, sound and even color to balance the body's natural energy.
Chakra Balancing History
Discussions of Chakras date back to India between 2000 and 600 B.C. In the Vedas, the oldest written book in India's history, Chakras are first contemplated. The Vedas were written by Indo-European invaders, and the original meaning of the word chakra (wheel) refers to the wheels on the chariots of the invading Indo-Europeans. The word Chakra also metaphorically represented the sun, denoting the eternal cycle of time called a Kālacakra. In some Indian religions the word Chakravartin is used to represent an ideal universal ruler, who ruled ethically and benevolently over the entire world. The Chakravartins are said to be preceded by a glowing golden discus. It has been speculated that what people believed they saw was the powerful third chakra. Later, in 600 B.C. Chakras were given mention as centers of psychic consciousness in Yoga Upanishads. Since then chakras have become an integral part of yoga philosophy. In 1919, Arthur Avalon published his book, The Serpent Power, which is largely credited with bringing chakras to the western world.
