Wellness & Holistic Therapy: Reiki
Reiki healing is a natural method that balances one's life force energy. Reiki is both a spiritual practice and healing modality. As a spiritual practice it will quicken your path to higher awareness and understanding. As a healing modality it is like a light that shines on those aspects of self that no longer serve you in a healthy way. Spiritual growth is often prompted by dis-ease, whether it be body, mind, emotion or spirit. If there is a difficulty in your life, a behavior that you want to change, a way of being that you want to achieve, an illness you want to heal: Reiki can help. This treatment promotes deep relaxation, destroys energy blockages, detoxifies the system, and provides healing and vitality.
Reiki History
Reiki is an ancient healing art form that was re-discovered, and named (Rei-Ki; meaning "Spirit" and "Life Force"), by Mr. Mikao Usui of Kyoto, Japan. The story goes that he had fallen on hard times and was seeking ways to solve his problems in a way that would enrich his spirit and be of service to others. One day while in meditation on Mt. Karuma, he had a sator (a fleeting glimpse of a higher order or sudden understanding). Shortly after this experience he founded the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkei (Usui Reiki Healing Method Society).
During his lifetime Mikao taught Reiki to approximately 2000 people and initiated between 14 and 20 Reiki Masters. There were up to 40 Reiki Schools throughout Japan during his lifetime.
Reiki made its way to the United States via a Japanese Naval Officer, Mr. Chujjiro Hayashi, who brought it to Hawaii. While in Hawaii, Mr. Hayashi initiated Japanese immigrant, Hawayo H. Takata into the Reiki Method including the Master initiation. Mrs. Takata later brought Reiki to the mainland. After Ms. Takata's death the Western Reiki movement grew into multiple branches. There similarly, appears to be at least two Reiki paths in Japan at this time, though all Reiki paths come from the same Spiritual source.
