Wellness & Holistic Therapy: Swedish Massage
A medium-pressure, full body massage using therapeutic-grade essential oils for relief of tension and improved circulation. Massages, which seemingly stimulate only the body's surface, go deeper to evoke emotional insight. This connects us to the divine part of ourselves through physical liberation. We can then begin to perceive ourselves, the world and others in a fresh manner.
Swedish Massage History
The true father of Swedish Massage is not a Swede, but rather Johan Georg Mezger who was born in Holland. Mezger took pre-existing techniques and simplified and fit them into the set now known and used as Swedish Massage. Johan Georg Mezger used terms such as tapotement (striking), frictions (rubbing), and petrissage (kneading) to describe the movements and practice of Swedish and classic massage. In 1868 Mezger wrote a book on massage as well as a dissertation titled "The Treatment of Foot Sprain by Massage." One of the massage feats Mezger is most well known for is his successful treatment of the crown-prince of Denmark for chronic joint pain. Johann Mezger is also said to be the influence for which the Dutch Association for Medical Gymnastics and Massage has spawned.
The man often associated with being the "father of Swedish Massage", Peter Henry Ling, is really the "father of physical therapy." Peter Henry Ling founded and ran a gymnastics institute in which many of these strokes were used; however, he was not the first to create the medical model of Swedish Massage or to utilize it.
